Walk the ancient path from Montsegur to Morenci where the castle of Massabrac once stood that was a way station to many of the fleeing Cathars. Nothing is left of the chateau of Massabrac today save a few references in the old writings. Long before the Cathars, the mountain of Morenci was a sacred place of worship for the Iberian-Celts. Come meet the sun god Belanos as he smiles at you from the middle of a stone cross perched high atop the hill. It's another case where a pagan site was christianized in the 18th century. Find out where the necropolis is housed and how the people were ritually buried. Learn the strange legends behind the 'hand of Morenci' and take a little walk through the forest to the Roc of Fougausse, a huge rock with a large engraved circle that may have been used for ceremonies, but whose origins no one really knows, and the sacred spring that is housed nearby.
We will stop for a picnic lunch and then enjoy our walk back to Montsegur discussing what it must have been like to ride on horseback under the concealment of night, trying to stay out of range of the enemy and why this path was sacred to so many since time out of mind.
