Take a fifteen minute drive down to Belesta and leave the car by the Pont de la Prince (the Bridge of the Prince). After a short walk, hidden on the hillside is the remains of a remote fort, also known as the Oppidum de Mayne, which was the trading center of the region at one time when the Gauls made the trek across the Tabor to meet with the Romans coming from the Mediterranean to exchange iron for pottery. The hilltop oppidum offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The oppidum was partially excavated in the 1940s. To that lucky and observant person, old coins and amphora are still easy to find and found all the time. Very little has been disturbed here for a very long time. It is recommended that you wear pants as there is no real trail to the old fort and you may have to pass through some brush or climb a couple of low stone walls (two or three feet), but the scenic beauty makes it more than worth it. This tour is a treat for any pre-history buff.
